What is Varicose veins?

 

Varicose veins are "permanent dilation and tortuosity of veins probably as a result of incompetent valves. They are enlarged, swollen, and tortuous (twisting) veins.

 

What are the signs and symptoms of varicose veins?

 

Leg Pain, heavy legs, fatigue, Swollen ankles, aching, leg cramps, restless legs, skin discoloration, Venous eczema (stasis dermatitis - the skin at the affected area is red, dry and itchy)

 

Lipodermatosclerosis (fat under the skin just above the ankle can become hard, resulting in the skin shrinking)

 

In very severe cases, the varicose veins may rupture, or even cause ulceration of the lower leg, phlebitis and recurrent superficial blood clots and even a deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism that can cause death..

You will need to send it back with a Color duplex ultrasound scan if available. At your first visit, you will have a Color duplex ultrasound scan with a varicose veins mapping and detailed information about the treatment will be explained to you and your consent will be taken.
